If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I twisted my ankle pretty badly a little over two weeks ago. Luckily, it wasn’t a true sprain (which can take months to properly heal), but it still hurt a lot and I haven’t been able to workout or go for walks the last two weeks. After an annoying amount of rest and lots of icing, I felt good enough to take the ol’ ankle out for a spin last weekend.
Saturday was my test day; I had a few errands to run in the city, but if I wound up needing to come home early it wasn’t a big deal. My roommate, Tricia, met me for lunch at a place called Mulberry & Vine near Union Square, which was really good. It’s a fast casual place that serves lots of fresh salads, rice dishes, and grilled meats. I got a huge plate of food for around $10, which is a miracle in an expensive city like New York.
Over lunch, Tricia had the brilliant idea to visit Korea Town and belt our hearts out at karaoke bar. Having never been to a karaoke bar, I was excited to go! We wound up spending an hour at a bar in K-Town and sang everything from ABBA to Kiss. Alas, I don’t think a singing career is in either of our futures.
Having managed to get around NYC fairly well on Saturday, I made plans to meet my friend Caroline at the Met the next day. As you probably saw plastered all over your Facebook feeds, the Met Gala happened recently, and the gala exhibit is currently on display until the end of July. Titled “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” the exhibit showcases pieces from modern designers that range from pseudo nun’s habits to various sparkly dresses with angel wings. All in all, it’s an amazing exhibit and I highly recommend visiting if you’re a fashion lover (just remember that the Met now charges admission!).
Another exhibit I was dying to see was titled “Visitors to Versailles.” For this exhibit, we were given an audio guide, but the tour was more of a reenactment of the life at Versailles than your typical tour. I quite enjoyed it, and thought it was a nice change of pace from your usual tours. The furniture on display in the exhibit was gorgeous—no surprise, since it was made for a king, after all.
Caroline and I ended our afternoon with a walk through Central Park, which comes alive on sunny days. I also inhaled a food cart hot dog, because it seemed like the thing to do on such a beautiful day.
I’m currently gearing up for a long weekend in Virginia with my family. We’ll be visiting a few Civil War battlefields in the Fredericksburg area, so if you have any recommendations please leave me a comment!
