Beer gardens may have originated in Bavaria, but after living in Berlin for 6 years I can say with confidence that Germany’s capital city has plenty of excellent beer gardens too.
Beer gardens typically have a laid back vibe that make them a great place to hang out on the weekend or after work. They’re family-friendly, fairly cheap, and most places have various alcohol-free drink options for those of us who don’t imbibe.
Here are just some of the best beer gardens in Berlin, categorized by neighborhood. Most places close for the winter and re-open in April, so get out there and enjoy a drink with a view while beer garden season lasts!

Beer Garden Map
CapRivi (Charlottenburg)
🌭 Light bites
💶 Cash or card
🍻 Beer, soft drinks, and wine
This hidden gem is Charlottenburg’s only beer garden on the Spree River! It’s a small, unassuming place that attracts locals all summer long.
There’s no decor to speak of, just long tables meant for sharing and getting to know your neighbors, plus beach chairs on the grass that you can move around to form groups.
The view of the Spree River is unparalleled, and it’s the perfect spot to hang out and watch the boats go by.
Holzmarkt 25 (Friedrichshain)
🌭 Various food options
💶 Cash or card
🍻 Beer, soft drinks, and wine
Holzmarkt 25 is a unique combo of beer garden / concert venue / outdoor food market / general cool hangout spot. It’s not traditional in the slightest, but if you’re looking for someplace that’s “typical Berlin,” you’re going to love Holzmarkt.
After ordering your drink or food (try the pizza), explore the different seating areas scattered throughout the massive space. There are places to sit on the water, and all the way at the back there’s an old boat that’s been converted to a seating area directly on the Spree River.
On warm evenings and weekends, Holzmarkt is hopping, so try to arrive early if you want to sit near the water to watch the sunset.
Fischerhütte am Schlachtensee (Grunewald)
🌭 Basic German fare
💶 Cash or card
🍻 Beer and soft drinks
The idyllic Fischerhütte (“fishing hut”) on the banks of the Schlachtensee lake has one of the prettiest beer gardens in Berlin.
The historic guest house opened its doors in 1723 and has retained its old world charm. Its beer garden overlooking the water has classic German beers on tap (think: Augstiner, etc.) and also offers light bites like bratwurst and pretzels.
Since the beer garden is so far removed from the city center (but still super easy to reach via public transportation!), you don’t hear any street traffic while you’re sipping your drink. It’s a welcome oasis to this city dweller, that’s for sure!
Claire’s Tip: The Schlachtensee is one of my favorite lakes in Berlin, so definitely include the Fischerhütte in your lake day itinerary.
Paulsborn Castle Beer Garden (Grunewald)
🌭 Basic German fare (plus an Italian restaurant onsite)
💶 Cash or card
🍻 Beer, wine, and soft drinks
I stumbled across this cozy beer garden last autumn on a stroll around the Grunewald Lake. It overlooks the water and is attached to the Paulsborn Castle hotel.
There are a few stalls selling simple foods like bratwurst and french fries. If you’re craving a more substantial meal, there’s a nice Italian restaurant called 12 Apostoli that’s also attached to the hotel and has its own outdoor seating area.
This is an especially nice beer garden to visit in the later summer / early autumn when the leaves are starting to change.
Claire’s Tip: There’s a small parking lot at the back of the hotel, so you can easily drive here if you don’t want to take public transportation.
BRLO Brwhouse (Kreuzberg)
🌭 Veggie-forward eats
💶 Card only
🍻 House-brewed craft beer and hard cider
Craft beer lovers, meet your new favorite beer garden! BRLO is a Berlin brewery that opened its first restaurant and beer garden in 2016.
The BRLO Brwhouse is built out of shipping containers, which lends it a slightly industrial-yet-comfy aesthetic that feels both hip and inclusive.
This is one of the few beer gardens in Berlin where you can order craft beer, made on site. They also serve excellent hard ciders, and their food menu is veggie-forward and truly excellent (albeit pricey for a beer garden).
Claire’s Tip: Want to learn more about this craft brewery? You can book a brewery tour and tasting of BRLO!
Golgatha Biergarten (Kreuzberg)
🌭 Grilled dishes (+ vegetarian options)
💶 Card only
🍻 Beer, wine, cocktails, coffee, and more
Golgatha a popular beer garden tucked away in the middle of beautiful Viktoria Park.
And when I say “tucked away,” I mean that I’ve been several times and always end up retracing my steps to locate the entrance! (If you go to their website, they actually have an interactive video tutorial on their homepage that shows you how to locate the beer garden.)
What makes this beer garden so unique — besides its somewhat hidden location and peaceful atmosphere — is its free Wi-Fi. Guests are invited to order a glass of something cold in the afternoon and work remotely from the comfort of the beer garden.
Zollpackhof (Moabit)
🌭 Bavarian food
💶 Cash or card
🍻 Augustiner beer, plus soft drinks and a basic cocktail / wine selection
If you’re looking for an authentic Bavarian beer garden in Berlin, you’ve found the place.
Zollpackhof has a partnership with the famous Augustiner brewery (one of Munich’s “Big Six”) and its beer garden is located under the canopy of several shady trees, the centermost being a beautiful 150-year-old horse chestnut.
Zollpackhof’s charming beer garden on the banks of the Spree River is one of my favorites in Berlin. It’s within walking distance of the central train station, which you’d think would make this place feel like a tourist trap, but it’s actually such a nice spot!
Prater Garten (Prenzlauer Berg)
🌭 Basic fare from the grill
💶 Cash only
🍻 House-brewed dark or light beer from the tap, plus a house-made radler
Berlin’s oldest beer garden is also one of the largest, with enough benches to accommodate close to 600 thirsty guests.
In the summer, Prater Garten is always full, yet the service remains speedy and friendly. There are plenty of trees in the middle of the beer garden to provide shade on a hot day, and string lights gently illuminate the space after dark.
I love meeting friends at this no-frills, relaxed beer garden in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, and I think you will too.
Claire’s Tip: Prater Garten has been undergoing some construction, and the main entrance has moved. It’s very clearly marked, so you shouldn’t have any issues finding it!
Tempel Garten (Tempelhof)
🌭 Basic fare from the grill (+ non-German veggie options)
💶 Card only
🍻 Berlin and German beers
The hip Tempel Garten is located within Tempelhofer Feld. As you sip your drink, you can watch the many joggers, bikers, and skateboarders zoom past on the former runways of the old Tempelhof Airport.
This is one of the most “Berlin” beer gardens, with its bar and grill built from what appears to be exposed scaffolding and various industrial materials.
I love the vibes here, but I recommend sticking to just the drinks since the food is just “decent” and seems overpriced.
Claire’s Tip: This is a fantastic spot to enjoy the sunset. You can rent a bike for an hour or two to race around the old runways, then cool off at Tempel Garten as the sun goes down.
Cafe am Neuen See (Tiergarten)
🌭 Woodfired pizzas, grilled sausages, and Bavarian fare
💶 Cash or card
🍻 Various beers on tap, plus housemade lemonade
The stunning beer garden at Cafe am Neuen See is without a doubt the most beautiful in Berlin.
The beer garden is nestled within the heart of the Tiergarten (one of my favorite parks in Berlin!) and looks like something you’d see on a postcard. Lush trees, ambient string lights, and artfully placed potted plants surround the long benches typical of any beer garden worth its salt.
The dining / hangout area is right on the Neuer See lake, and you’ll often see paddle boats on the water throughout your stay.
This is one of the more expensive beer gardens in Berlin, but the food is fantastic and you can’t beat the ambience or views.
Calire’s Tip: As a heads up, the self-service area can be confusing to navigate with its many ordering windows and separate rows of cash registers en route to the exit.
Schleusenkrug (Tiergarten)
🌭 Various warm and grilled dishes
💶 Cash or card
🍻 German beers (tap or bottle), plus cocktails, wine, and liquors
On the far end of the Tiergarten, near the zoo, is the more unassuming Schleusenkrug beer garden that often passes under the radar.
This beer garden has been in operation since 1954 and is located on one of the locks that dots the Spree River (“Schleuse” means “lock” in German, hence the name).
The food here is fantastic (get the Flammkuchen!), the service is fast, and there’s a good amount of seating both in the open and underneath awnings in the event of a sudden summer storm.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed beer garden in the Tiergarten area and don’t want something as upscale as the Cafe am Neuen See, go to Schleusenkrug!
Claire’s Tip: Each Mug Has a Deposit!
Before you visit one of Berlin’s beer gardens, note that the price listed on the drinks menu isn’t the total price you’ll pay upfront. Each mug or glass comes with a deposit (called “Pfand”), typically no more than a Euro or two. You’ll get your deposit back once you return the mug or glass to the service counter!
Prost!
I’ve visited a number of beer gardens since moving to Berlin, and I’m sure there are more great ones for me to discover. If I’ve left your favorite off of this list, drop me a comment below and I’ll check it out this spring or summer!
