How to See the Bornholmer Straße Cherry Blossoms: Getting There + Tips for Your Visit

By: Claire  On: February 26, 2026  Updated: February 26, 2026   Leave a comment

Throughout March and April, Berlin is awash in a sea of pink when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. The cherry blossoms at Bornholmer Straße are the biggest and best in the city center, but getting to them can be challenging. In this guide, I’ll explain how to get to the cherry blossom path at Bornholmer Straße plus tips for your visit.

When I moved to Berlin in May 2019, I didn’t realize I’d just missed what’s now my all-time favorite season. Nope, not spring — cherry blossom season!

There are tons of places to see cherry blossoms in Berlin, but the more than 200 cherry blossom trees near Bornholmer Straße station remain my favorite in the city center. They were gifted to the city of Berlin by a Japanese TV station called TV-Asahi and planted in the former death strip that once ran between the neighborhoods of Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding.

The Bornholmer Straße cherry blossom trees are symbols of peace in a city that was once divided by a 155-kilometer-long wall for nearly 30 years.

So although planning little “scavenger hunts” to spot as many cherry blossoms as possible is one of my all-time favorite spring activities in Berlin, each tree reminds me of the progress Germany has made since reunifying in 1990.

Happy cherry blossom hunting! ~Claire

How to Reach the Cherry Blossom Path (+ Map)

  1. Ride the S1, 2, 8, 25, 26, or 85 to “Bornholmer Straße.”
  2. Exit the station and head East towards “Platz des 9. November” (November 9th Square).
  3. Keep looking to your right, you should see a staircase leading down beneath the bridge BEFORE you reach the pieces of the Berlin Wall on display.
  4. Go down the stairs and turn right again. You should be heading north on Norwegerstraße, although at this point it will be a dirt path and not an actual paved road.
  5. Walk less than 5 minutes — the cherry blossom path should be very obvious!

The Best Time to Visit

I can’t tell you when exactly the cherry blossom trees will begin blooming because each year I’ve lived in Berlin the peak bloom times have differed.

Before writing this guide, I scrolled through the past 6 years’ worth of cherry blossom photos I have saved on my phone to track when the trees at Bornholmer Straße began blooming. Here are my findings:

There are two kinds of cherry blossom trees in Berlin: 1) early bloomers, which have very pale pink (almost white) petals, and 2) late bloomers, which have deep rich petals. The cherry blossoms at Bornholmer Straße are late bloomers.

The late-blooming trees tend to flower as early as the tail end of March to as late as the second week of April. 2025 was a late blooming year, with peak bloom happening roughly mid-April (which is very late for this part of the world!).

With that timeframe in mind, my best guess is that the cherry blossoms at Bornholmer Straße will be in bloom by the second week of April.

Claire’s Tip: If you want to track the trees in darn-near real time, follow the Bornholmer Straße geo-tag on Instagram and / or TikTok. Once people start posting photos of the cherry blossom trees, you’ll know it’s Go Time.

My Top Tips and Recommendations

  • Arrive early. This location gets VERY busy during the peak bloom period, so I suggest arriving as early as you can stand it (a friend and I always go before 9am on a Saturday or Sunday and then treat ourselves to a fun coffee or tea afterwards).
  • Weekends are the busiest. If you have a flexible work schedule and can visit during the work week, do it! On Saturdays and Sundays, the path will be pretty much packed with people by 10 – 10:30am.
  • The pre- and post-peak bloom periods are also gorgeous. Most people try to see the cherry blossoms when they’re in peak bloom, but the trees are still beautiful just before the flowers open and after the petals start to carpet the ground.
  • Watch out! This is also a biking path. When the cherry blossoms aren’t in season, this path near Bornholmer Straße is a regular biking and jogging path like any other. Be aware of your surroundings, because bikers might not be able to brake in time if you pop out from behind a tree while taking photos.
  • Read the plaques at November 9th Square, too. Remember: these cherry blossoms were planted in the former death strip of the Berlin Wall. There’s a wonderful outdoor exhibit up by the Bösebrücke that has photos and information about the Wall and the border crossing at Bornholmer Straße. There’s even a surviving piece of the Berlin Wall on display!

Falkplatz

Prenzlauer Berg is one of the best neighborhoods in Berlin to see cherry blossoms. You can easily pair your visit to Bornholmer Straße with the following cherry blossom locations (all of which are also late bloomers):

  • Korsörer Straße — This pretty residential street is lined with cherry blossoms that bloom brilliantly each spring. You can reach Korsörer Straße from the Bornholmer Straße cherry blossom path in about 20 minutes by crossing over the Schwedter Steg pedestrian bridge.
  • Falkplatz — Less than 5 minutes from Korsörer Straße is another cluster of cherry blossoms in front of the Max-Schmeling-Halle.
  • Volkspark am Weinberg — Another 20-minute walk from Falkplatz is this lovely park that has a small pond lined with cherry blossom trees. (This park is very close to Rostenthaler Platz, which has tons of cafes. I’m sure you’ve worked up quite an appetite by this point if you’ve followed the cherry blossoms all the way here!)

🌸 Enjoy Cherry Blossom Season! 🌸

I love seeing the many cherry blossom trees in Berlin bloom throughout March and April, and I always look forward to “discovering” new-to-me trees each year.

If you use this guide to visit the cherry blossoms at Bornholmer Straße, it would mean the world to me if you left a comment below letting me know how you enjoyed your visit!
